Have you ever walked through a museum and felt like the art wasn’t just hanging on the walls—but actually speaking to you? That’s exactly how I felt during one of our many field trips at Colossal Academy, a school where learning rarely stays confined to a desk. Instead, it spills into the world around us, turning everyday places into classrooms of their own.
Hands-On Learning Beyond the Classroom
One of the things I appreciate most about Colossal Academy is its commitment to hands-on learning. Field trips aren’t occasional rewards—they’re an essential part of how we explore ideas, connect with our community, and understand subjects in deeper, more meaningful ways.
These immersive learning experiences have shaped how I approach education. They’ve also become some of my favorite memories from the year.
Exploring the Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA)
One of the most impactful trips I took was to the Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA). Since it was only a short walk from my house, the experience felt both familiar and unexpectedly inspiring.
Inside the museum, we explored vibrant paintings, intricate textiles, and thought-provoking exhibits. Outside, the sculpture garden felt like stepping into someone’s imagination. One piece looked like glowing fool’s gold in the sunlight, while another featured half of a tractor embedded in concrete.
During our guided tour, I learned how artists use materials and textures to communicate emotions and tell stories. We also spent time sketching, which helped me slow down, observe details, and express what I saw. This skill has carried over into other classes, especially when documenting projects and brainstorming creative ideas.
Immersive Art at Superblue
While the ICA grounded me in observation and interpretation, Superblue took me somewhere completely different. It felt like stepping into a dream.
The bubble room was part artwork, part playground—bringing out everyone’s inner child. The digital flower wall glowed and shifted so beautifully it felt almost unreal. But the most unforgettable space was the light room, filled with moving rays that made the entire environment feel alive, like walking through a living painting.
Why Experiential Learning Matters
Experiences like these are what make Colossal Academy stand out. Field trips don’t just support learning—they transform it. They show students that education can be immersive, creative, and full of discovery.
At Colossal, I’ve learned that the world itself is a classroom, filled with lessons waiting to be explored.
Learning You Can Step Into
These moments have changed how I see education. Learning isn’t something you passively receive—it’s something you actively step into.
And sometimes, all it takes is walking into a museum and letting the experience speak to you.
